In recent years, High Pressure Laminates (HPL) has evolved to reach very high quality standards, becoming one of the most used materials in the construction of interior doors, furniture and floors.

What is High Pressure Laminate (HPL)?
It is considered to be one of the most durable decorative surface materials and is available with special performance properties including chemical, fire and wear resistance. 

Special grades of HPL can be postformed around curved edges by application of heat and restraint. HPL is laminated to a panel utilizing a variety of adhesives.

Particleboard or MDF are the preferred substrate because they provide a stable, durable, consistent and economical foundation.

 

HPL is produced by saturating multiple layers of kraft paper with phenolic resin. A layer of printed décor paper is placed on top of the kraft paper before pressing. The resulting sandwich is fused together under heat and pressure (more than 1,000 PSI). Because phenolic and melamine resins are thermoset plastics, the curing process transforms the resin into plastic by a cross linking process that converts the paper sheets into a single, rigid laminated sheet. Thermo-setting creates strong, irreversible bonds that contribute to HPL's durability.

One of the most familiar and widely used engineered decorative furniture surfaces, HPL was originally made famous by the Formica Corporation. It is sold in rigid sheets that are about .028 to .048 inches thick, and must be glued to a substrate, usually particleboard, for furniture and interior applications.

Commerial	HPL is found extensively in fast-food restaurants, on transaction counters, booths, tabletops, walls, and bathroom dividers. You'll also see it in offices on reception desks and work surfaces, on hotel room vanities, in elevator cabs, and on airline check-in desks. Care must be taken when using HPL in healthcare and education settings: the edge seams may harbor bacteria, and sharp edges and corners can cause injuries.
Residential	Countertops and vanities, mudrooms, desktops, and on any surface that will be subject to high use or heavy cleaning.
